The figure shows the distribution of neutral species as a function of altitude from 14 km to the exobase near 250 km, as predicted by the ASPEN-Mars model of Crowley et al. (2006). The detailed ASPEN-Mars model chemistry calculations are in reasonable agreement with the compositional profiles deduced by Nair (1994). The fully coupled chemistry and dynamics in the ASPEN model can provide a context for understanding the detailed chemistry and dynamical mechanisms that lead to the atmospheric structure obseved by future Mars aeronomy missions.
